Independent Living - Level 3
Learning Independent Living Skills
Level Three is an exciting time! This is our Independent Living Level. This is the maintenance program and final phase of our curriculum, during which students learn independent living skills. In prior levels, staff was there to guide and monitor each student’s progress. At this level, staff assistance is lessened. While we will continue to provide guidance, students are required to essentially care for themselves. This program provides the practical application of the independent living acquired at Benchmark. Students balance a life of school, work and leisure, as well as the temptations and distractions that may arise.
Applying Independent Living Skills
During Level Three, the Independent Living Program, students become responsible for getting themselves to work and back home on their own accord. They monitor their receipts and are expected to be accountable for their finances. They purchase their own food, clothes and necessities. If they have an automobile, they generally pay for their related expenses. Independent living program skills are being fully utilized and applied at this point.
Future Independent Living Skills
Now that students have mastered the independent living skills necessary for development, it's time to plan for life after Benchmark graduation. We believe our graduates will function better by continuing to pursue independence rather than by returning home. Some students decide to stay at Benchmark in the Graduate Program, which allows them to attend school as they live and work near the comfort of Benchmark facilities and staff. Others make plans to attend college (either locally or near family or friends); and still others choose to live and work in a desired area as they pursue self-care in earnest.
Now, it is time for them to stretch their wings – and fly!
